Steel furring channels, arched? thumbnail

Hey, my name is irwanbee, and I first published 'Steel furring channels, arched?' on 16th July, 2010, within the steel section.

Is anyone out there familiar with steel furring channels? If so, I am wondering if there are arched steel furring channels. All the steel furring channels I’ve seen in the past have always been linear. So, are there curved/arched steel furring channels, and if so, what are they used for? Domes? Archways? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

jasdudley: I’m a civil/structural engineer. Steel furring (or hat) channels are typically used to install new drywall systems over old walls. They are easy to bend along their weak axis and could be used to refinish certain curved walls and ceilings. However, there are metal framing systems and members designed specifically for curved structures; see the link below for one such system.
